About the Division

We strive to grow as a nationally recognized center for compassionate, comprehensive and innovative care for patients with gastrointestinal and liver diseases. We seek new treatments through research and we educate physicians and scientists on how best to approach the care of patients with these diseases. 

The UC San Diego Gastroenterology Division was founded in the mid-1970s by Henry Wheeler, MD, who served as its first division chief.

Many local San Diego gastroenterologists received their gastroenterology training at UC San Diego.
