Ravinder Mittal, MD
Professor Ravinder K. Mittal is the director of the GI Motility Laboratory at UC San Diego Health Sciences. He is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. Dr. Mittal’s research has been funded continuously by the National Institute of Health (NIH) since 1988.
During the last 25 years of his investigative career, he has made number of seminal observations with regards to the role of crural diaphragm as an external lower esophageal sphincter, transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxation as the pathophysiologic mechanism of reflux diseases, muscle hypertrophy in esophageal motor disorders, role of longitudinal muscles of the esophagus in health and disease, effects of esophageal contraction on esophageal wall perfusion and functional morphology of pelvic floor muscles and external anal sphincter.
His clinical and research interests are in the area of gastrointestinal motility related disorders with special focus on the swallowing disorders, esophageal motility disorder, non-cardiac chest pain, gastroesophageal reflux disease, problems related to the anorectum and pelvic floor disorders.
