GI Inpatient at UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest

The gastroenterology inpatient rotation at UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest encompasses inpatient consultations for general gastroenterology and advanced endoscopy at a tertiary care referral hospital. There may be medical students, interns, and residents on this rotation. This rotation offers experience in the care of underserved as well as a large HIV-infected patient populations. Hillcrest is also a referral center for pancreatology Common GI consult indications include upper GI bleeding (variceal and non-variceal, lower GI bleeding), iron-deficiency anemia, suspected GI malignancy, and pancreatico-biliary diseases (pancreatitis and choledocholithiasis). Fellows perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures including hemostasis and PEG tube placement and gain exposure to a variety of advanced endoscopic procedures including ERCP, EUS, stent placement, and endoscopic pancreatic necrosectomy.

Jacobs Hepatology Inpatient

The hepatology inpatient rotation at UC San Diego Medical Center in Jacobs is predominantly a first-year rotation. There may be medical students, interns, and residents on this rotation. This rotation offers experience in the care of pre, peri, and post liver transplantation patients along with acute liver failure. Other common hepatology consult indications include management of cirrhosis including complications (ascites, encephalopathy, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis), hepatic complications of pregnancy and oncologic treatments, and chronic liver diseases such as hepatitis B and C. Fellows perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures including variceal banding and liver biopsies.

Inpatient at Veteran Affairs San Diego Healthcare System

The inpatient rotation at the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System is predominantly a first-year rotation in the care of United States military veterans. There may be medical students, interns, and residents on this rotation. This rotation offers experience in addressing gastroenterology and hepatology consults in a veteran population. This includes elderly patients and patients with chronic diseases related to smoking and alcohol as well as military-related disabilities. Fellows perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures including hemostasis.

The outpatient gastroenterology/hepatology rotation is predominantly a first-year rotation. Fellows will see new and returning patients in a variety of hepatology and gastroenterology clinics at the medical center and VA hospital. Fellows perform outpatient endoscopic procedures at the VA including colonoscopy with polypectomy and upper endoscopy.

Outpatient at Veteran Affairs San Diego Healthcare System

The gastroenterology outpatient rotation at the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) encompasses outpatient clinic and endoscopy in a veteran population. Fellows will perform high volume outpatient procedures including colonoscopy with polypectomy and endoscopy. Fellows also follow up pathology results and recommendations as well as gain experience with e-consults (electronic consults).

Gastroenterology Inpatient Rotation at Jacobs Medical Center

The gastroenterology inpatient rotation at Jacobs Medical Center encompasses inpatient consultations for general gastroenterology and advanced endoscopy at a tertiary care referral hospital. This rotation offers experience in the care of geriatric and oncologic patients as well as inpatient management of inflammatory bowel disease. There is a large volume of both GI cancer patients (esophagus, stomach, colorectal, and pancreato-biliary) as well as GI complications of non-GI cancers (graft vs. host disease in bone marrow transplant patients, biliary or bowel obstruction from metastatic tumors). Fellows perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures including hemostasis and gain exposure to a variety of advanced endoscopic procedures including ERCP, EUS, stent placement and balloon assisted enteroscopy.

Gastroenterology at Kaiser Permanente

The inpatient gastroenterology rotation at Kaiser Permanente® encompasses inpatient consultations for general gastroenterology, general hepatology, and advanced endoscopy. This rotation offers experience in the care of patients in a busy integrated healthcare delivery system with demographics reflecting working and middle class patients. Common consult indications include upper GI bleeding (variceal and non-variceal, lower GI bleeding), iron-deficiency anemia, suspected GI malignancy, and pancreatico-biliary diseases (pancreatitis and choledocholithiasis). Fellows perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures including hemostasis and PEG tube placement and gain exposure to a variety of advanced endoscopic procedures.

Gastroenterology Float Rotation

The Gastroenterology float rotation consists of providing available coverage for various rotations for a fellow on vacation. On weeks without coverage needed, fellows can participate in research. There is also outpatient clinic and endoscopy experience at the VA on weeks without coverage.

Research (NIH T32) Rotation

Fellows on the T32 Research rotation spend a half-day per week in their continuity clinic. They have additional outpatient endoscopy sessions at the VA. The majority of time for research fellows is spent working on their research studies with their faculty sponsors. This includes basic, clinical, translational, and outcomes research.
