REVEAL Cohort from Taiwan

The Taiwan cohort is a community-based prospective study involving seven townships in Taiwan established in 1991-1992. Approximately 23,820 residents aged 30-65 years were enrolled and they completed structured questionnaire carried out by well-trained public health nurses to obtain sociodemographic characteristics, personal and family history of diseases, dietary intake, and cigarette and alcohol consumption. Participants also had health examinations including abdominal ultrasound, and blood collection for HBsAg, HBeAg, antibodies against hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV), and serum levels of ALT, AST, and α-fetoprotein (AFP). Subjects who had HBsAg or anti-HCV, an elevated serum level of ALT, AST or AFP, or family history of hepatocellular carcinoma were followed routinely and had serial abdominal ultrasound and blood tests until June 30th, 2004. The wealth of information from this cohort has been used in many important studies on hepatitis B and C. We are collaborating with Prof. Chen to examine the interaction between various risk factors and their joint association with the risk of liver cancer.
